Julian Araujo, Defender of Liga MX, addressed recent transfer rumors and confirmed contact with Club America. However, he insisted that he remains ‘focused on LA Galaxy’ at this time.
Reports about the Mexico City team were inspired by Fernando Ortiz’s tease about the possible arrival of a Mexican back before the 2023 Liga MX Clausura. In particular, the Eagles were after Diego Barbosa and Julian Araujo.
The LA Galaxy player has since confirmed that talks had been held with Club America but denied any immediate move.
“Yeah, there was contact [with Club America]But I am here with Galaxy. I’m getting ready to go back to pre-season,” he said in an exclusive interview with 90min. “So I leave those things to my agent to handle, but I am focused on preparing for the season, getting ready and most importantly improving each and every day.”
The defender quickly proved himself to be one of the brightest young talents of Major League Soccer. He was an integral part of LA Galaxy, and earned appearances with Mexico’s national team.
He made his professional debut in 2019 and has since managed one goal, 20 assists and played in 100 Major League Soccer games for Western Conference. He scored 14 goals and had nine assists in 2022.
Given Araujo’s rapid nature on the ball and ability to transition from right-back to offensive winger, it’s not the first time an international club looks to the defender for reinforcement.
FC Porto emerged as the frontrunner for signing the player in August. The FC Porto team was interested in the LA Galaxy defender to strengthen their roster for the 2022/2023 season. The player was in talks with the team, but no deal was reached.
Although the defender has not yet made the leap from MLS, he reaffirmed that he is committed to playing abroad.
“I definitely want to go to Europe. It’s still my dream. That’s where I think I need to go to reach my highest potential. The sky’s the limit,” he said to 90min.
“But right now, I am focused on the Galaxy, winning the championship, performing at my best and staying consistent. You know, God’s timing is the best, so I am going to wait for that. And when that time comes, I will be ready for it.”
Julian Araujo will be partnering with the LA Galaxy to kick off the 2023 MLS Season against LAFC at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.
