WBO, IBF, WBC junior middleweight champion Natasha Jonas is trying to face the largest names doable in 2023.
Final Saturday evening in Manchester, Jonas added the IBF title to the WBO and WBC belts with a dominant ten spherical unanimous determination win over Marie-Eve Dicaire.
Earlier this 12 months, Jonas jumped up by a number of weight lessons to compete at junior middleweight.
In February, she knocked out Chris Namus to seize the WBO title on Kell Brook vs. Amir Khan undercard. Seven months later, she decisioned Patricia Berghult for the WBC title.
BOXXER’s Ben Shalom, who promotes Jonas, believes her accomplishments in 2022 have earned her ‘Fighter of The Yr’ honors.
“It has been an unimaginable 12 months,” Shalom instructed Sky Sports activities. “Three world title fights in a single 12 months, individually, and he or she’s gained all three at 154 [pounds] – it is unimaginable.
“It is unbelievable to suppose we have been in Manchester for Khan-Brook in February and he or she gained her first world title, now she’s headlined and gained her third world title. For me, she must be fighter of the 12 months in all of British boxing – presumably in world boxing. It is unprecedented and one thing nobody may have predicted.”
Now Shalom needs to match Jonas in a rematch with undisputed light-weight champion Katie Taylor – doubtless at 140 or a showdown with undisputed welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill.
“I feel we have seen she’s the one who has pushed her [Taylor] so, so shut in a tough surroundings, behind closed doorways – maybe, now trying again, not on the weight she feels most snug at,” Shalom mentioned of Jonas. “I feel she deserves a rematch and I feel that is the combat British followers could be most enthusiastic about.
“She simply needs the massive names now. She’s achieved all she may, and he or she’s carried out every part since she grew to become one of many first Olympians we have ever seen in girls’s boxing. To attain her goals to grow to be unified world champion, it is simply the massive names whether or not it is Shields, McCaskill or Taylor. For me, McCaskill and Taylor take advantage of sense.”
